sharing your work

When you publish in a De Gruyter journal there are many ways you can share the different versions of your article to drive the visibility, engagement and impact of your research.

Different versions of your article and how to share them

Your article can go through many versions on its journey from the manuscript you submit through the peer review process and recommended revisions, to the final article that is published online or in print.

What are the definitions of these different versions and how can you share them?

Authors Original Manuscript (AOM): this is the version of a paper before it has been submitted to a journal for peer review and is sometimes called a preprint.
close
Preprint: an academic journal article in draft form, prior to peer review, also known as the Authors Original Manuscript.

Submitted Manuscript Under Review (SMUR): the version of a paper that has been submitted to a journal and is undergoing peer review.
close
Accepted Manuscript (AM): this is the version of a paper that has undergone peer review, recommended amendments have been implemented and the manuscript has been accepted for publication by a journal, but has not yet been copy edited or type set. This is

Version of Record (VoR): this is the final or definitive version of a paper that is allocated a Digital Object Identifier(DOI), all metadata is provided, and it is published in a journal, for example on degruyter.com. This version has been through the pr

Self-archiving or sharing your article in a repository

Authors are often required by funders, institutions, or other organisations to make research articles funded by them to be made freely available online, or Open Access. Publishing your article as Gold Open Access will maximise its openness, discoverability and re-usability; learn more information on Open Access options at De Gruyter.

If you are not publishing your article with gold open access, you can follow the Green Open Access route, also known as “self-archiving”. In this case you post an earlier version of your manuscript in a repository or share it online. Learn more about your options for self-archiving in our reposition policy.

For more information about De Gruyter’s general policy for self-archiving please read our repository policy for journal publications.

Third-party material

Before you post any version of your article online, as the author you need to make sure that you have the correct permissions to include any third-party material.

When you post an article under a Creative Commons licence, the permission should allow the third-party material to either:

  1. be included under the Creative Commons licence or

  2. be clearly indicated as being protected by third-party copyright, with a clear statement that this content may not be reused without further permissions clearance from the identified third-party rights holder.

If you would like to re-use content from a De Gruyter journal, please do so through our partner, the Copyright Clearance Center.

Funder Mandates

Most institutions and funders have policies regarding how the research resulting from funded projects should be published and shared. You should check the requirements of your institution or funder to ensure that you are publishing your research according to these principles.

Authors can choose to publish as gold open access in order to comply with funder mandates that require them to publish immediate open access (e.g., those funders supporting Plan S principles). If your funder states you need to share your article after publication you can follow De Gruyter’s green open access, or “self-archiving policy”, which facilitates sharing of different versions of your article.

De Gruyter have deposit agreements with PubMed Central and Europe PubMed Central for articles from certain funders, including the National Institute for Health (NIH) and automatically deposit articles to meet their requirements.

For German authors we work with DeepGreen to facilitate the deposition of articles into institutional repositories in line with our embargo periods.
