Review by editors and peer review
Throughout the publication process your book will undergo a rigorous review process to ensure your book is of the quality and standard you would expect from an academic publisher.
Our editors contact experts in your specialist field and provide written proposals and a table of contents for review and feedback.
Once this is complete and you have signed your contract with us, you book will move into the manuscript preparation and submission stage.
Once you have submitted your manuscript another round of reviews will be conducted by experts in your field. Feedback is collected by your editor who will work with you and other editors to adapt your work and shape your manuscript so that it is ready for production and publication.
Finally, once your book is published your book can be reviewed and a book review can be published in a journal or other promotional outlet.
The guide below outlines the editorial and peer review process further
After we receive your proposal the relevant publishing division will assess its suitability for publication, consulting with the editors of the series where appropriate. At this stage we evaluate the quality of your proposal, ascertain that your work is a good fit for our portfolio and assess its marketability.
As you would expect from a publisher with our reputation for excellence, publications undergo a comprehensive peer review process. All external reviewers are researchers or academics specializing in the book’s subject area. We will also apply plagiarism checks or a fake manuscript detection system to ensure content quality.
You can find out more about why peer review is important and what the process involves in our blog post for authors and editors.
After evaluating your work, you will receive expert feedback from us. We may request that you make revisions to your proposal at this stage.
In order to best market your work, we will take the opportunity early on to ask you some important details about you and your manuscript. We will then work with you to optimize this information for search engines. We have professionals translate the marketing materials for foreign-language titles into English, enabling us to advertise them in our bilingual catalogs.
Please send the questionnaire to your editorial contact.
The information is later exported to sales partners and libraries as metadata. For this reason, it is important for the full set of details to be provided:
To assess the cost-effectiveness of your project and determine the price, we carry out individual calculations for each title.
Several factors play a role in this process including the size of the target audience, competing works, suitability for a series, the type of manuscript preparation, the complexity of the typesetting, and the number of illustrations.
We will notify you at an early stage in this process if grant funding is needed for your book’s publication. In this event we will support you in applying for external funding by providing the necessary calculations, while ensuring compliance with the relevant eligibility guidelines.
If you have opted for open access publication, your editor will inform you about the amount to be paid in fees. We will support you in applying for funding, while ensuring compliance with the relevant eligibility guidelines.
